IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC, the Swedish rock band led by THE HELLACOPTERS architect and former ENTOMBED drummer Nicke Andersson, will release its new album, “Pop War”, on March 9 via Psychout. The ten-song CD was recorded at Gutterview Studios in Stockholm.

For all the vinyl lovers out there, “Pop War” will be out on a strictly limited clear vinyl version limited to 300 copies only on February 24, and as a red vinyl version limited to 600 copies on March 2. On March 9, the album will be made available as a regular CD, as a limited CD version in 10-inch sleeve with an exclusive “Iron On”, and on black vinyl with download code.

Since the release of its self-titled debut album in 2010, IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC has played most of the big festivals, played support to bothGUNS N’ ROSES and KISS, toured in Sweden, Spain, Germany, and also found time to release the EP “In Concert” containing studio versions of their live favorites.

IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC consists of Andersson, Dolf de Borst on bass, Thomas Eriksson (ex-CAPTAIN MURPHY) on drums and Tobias Egge of THE OBJECTS on guitar.

OPERA DIABOLICUS – 1614 (2012)

Described as opera doom-rock, 1614 by Opera Diabolicus is a dark and theatrical musical piece delivered by the wicked minds of Swedish composer/musician David Grimoire and lyricist Adrian de Crow.

The inspiration for the band came in 2006 after Grimoire and de Crow witnessed a stage play of Umberto Eco’s book The Name of the Rose. Soon after, the duo set out to create a theatrical rock opera based on the same kind of story. The music is a combination of Candlemass-esque riffs, Therion-like dynamics and King Diamond-ish theatrical atmospheres.

Guest musicians featured are Snowy Shaw (Therion, King Diamond), Mats Leven (Therion, Yngwie Malmsteen), Niklas Isfeld (Dream Evil), Jake E (Amaranthe, Dreamland) and Camilla Alisander-Ason on soprano vocals.

The album is dramatic, mysterious, atmospheric, epic and slightly demented. It’s like Phantom Of The Operameets Jesus Christ Superstar. There are operatic choirs and orchestral arrangements similar to something Therion would pull off. The production has an organic and robust sound, due to producer Andy LaRocque.

Shaw’s drumming is pretty spectacular, as is the rest of the band’s musical prowess. The riffs are like chugging razors and the overall atmosphere is eerie and evil. The album is loaded with melodic interludes, tasteful guitar leads, opera/choir segments, eerie piano melodies, demonic growls, evil laughs and angelic harmonies.

The 8 tracks that grace the CD are long, with the exception of the short intro. The first proper song after the intro is the 10 minute “The Gates,” which is a great introduction to Opera Diabolicus’ sinister world. “Blood Countess Bathory” is a cinematic extravaganza with its grandiose sound and epic atmosphere.

Even with the lengthy songs, the album flows nicely like a dramatic opera, movie or play. The music and lyrics suck you in and you’ll be hanging onto every word. 1614 has lots of twists and turns, a good story line, evil sounding music, great vocalists and musicians. You really can’t go wrong with Opera Diabolicus’ diabolical debut album.

Canadian composer and multi-instrumentalist RICK MILLER made his debut effort as a solo artist back in 1983 with the new age production Starsong, which shifted a highly respectable 30.000 units at the time. He would follow up this venture with Windhaven in 1987, and his efforts Interstellar Passage from 1998 and the EP No Passion, No Pain from 2009 would continue exploring similar musical territories.

But after honing his craft working at Sound Design Studios in Toronto throughout the 80’s and 90’s, Miller wanted to have a go at his true musical love as well, atmospheric progressive rock inspired by artists such as Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues and Steve Hackett.

This lead to a flurry of releases following the start of the millenium: The One (2003), Dreamtigers (2004), The End of Days (2006) and Angel of My Soul (2008). These efforts gave Miller a good reputation, and in 2009 he was signed by Canadian indie label Unicorn Records. His first release for this label was the 2009 effort Falling Through Rainbows.

Review:
It is pretty obvious that Italy’s Cathouse has two things on their mind – music and sex, and I’m sure they are using this mini album in an attempt to get the later. These long haired foreigners have done their homework and know exactly what made sleaze metal so great. Those elements are gritty vocals, searing solos and a “fuck you” attitude, all of which Cathouse seem to posses.
“Lesbian Night” kicks things off after the short funny intro of “Phone Call” and begins with wailing guitars. I have no idea what the singer is saying but it sounds like him and the band are having a hell of a time. “From My Heart” is an average song, but the riff throughout is incredible. The best song on In Pussy We Trust has to be “Teenager Desire”. It has a harmonica and slide guitar and sounds like something Cinderella would have pulled off in their later years.
One song on here is kind of sad, that being “Time To Be Superstar”. The lyrics go, “time to be superstar for me”, and even though these guys have the talent, the chances of a sleaze band becoming superstars these days are miniscule. It pisses a guy off knowing that bands like Cathouse exist in obscurity while completely inept bands rule the ‘rock’ charts. But maybe this type of music is supposed to remain underground?
Vocalist DD Cat has an appropriate name as he has a screech that some listeners might not be able to handle. He has the perfect voice for Cathouse, but sometimes he is too over the top (Axl Rose also has this effect on me). Overall I enjoyed In Pussy We Trust, a debut album that should satisfy fans of dirty hard rock.

1997, the band recorded the single “One Life, One Soul” with opera star Montserrat Caballe, and it also appeared in several television shows. In March the same year the band received the award “Prix Walo”, and in August confirmed their status by throwing on the market a beautiful acoustic live album, “D-Frosted”. As always settled at the first position, the plate three months later became a double platinum.

His first musical calling card was Marc grass in front of more than 10 years, at that timeas Thonk. Another big footprint he set in 2004 with its new, named after his pen name,RAK progressive band in the landscape. The concept album about the life of themonarch butterfly and the story of a girl living through the changes must be satisfied with complex rhythm patterns, changing from quiet, melodic moments on one side andaggressive rock parts on the other side. Now sees “Lepidoptera II – The Book of Flight,”the light of day.

Marc Grassi has left for his third work of a lot of time. Eight years have passed, in whichhe, and I quote, “child of the conceptual predecessor,” composed, recorded and grind.He himself describes the album as a modern, atmospheric, richly harmonic and rhythmicelements accessible to and in spite of its complexity as clearly and emotionally. As hehas also now on Lepidoptera Liechti Mike on drums and Dave Thwaites with a singer on board. New is joined by Stefan Gabele it on guitar. While grass is itself rooted in the tradition of great role models such as Genesis and Yes, Liechti controls in a strong andcomplex game in the vein of Tool, Planet X and Gabel takes a blend of blues and prog metal like Symphony X on the fretboard. Dave Thwaites finally, oftenrough-rocking voice. The music is moving, consequently, the force field of these influences: Retro progmetalligem with paint, packed into a concept album.
