Ruphus were among the best known and most enduring Norwegian bands of the seventies, even though their line-up changed several times. The band formed in 1970 with Asle Nilsen (bass) and Hans Petter Danielsen (guitar). The musicians had no serious intentions and played for their own pleasure.

Upon hearing the debut album Clepsydra, critics immediately rushed to look for parallels. Naturally, they quickly found. The band has been compared to Marillion, Fish and IQ, and rightfully so. In general, it is quite difficult to perform progressive without inheriting the work of those who stood at the origins of the style.
