A Sound Of Thunder – Out Of Darkness (2012)
Dangerdog has been inundated with female led metal bands since the beginning of the year. Here’s another one: A Sound of Thunder, from Washington DC, with Nina Osegueda at the microphone. Out of the Darkness is their second release.
A Sound of Thunder: with matching black tees.
For Nina’s part, think a mix of Dickinson, Halford, and Dio in metal diva form. Or for something more outlandish, imagine if country singer Faith Hill went metal. (Listen to the opener, The Day I Die, and you may hear what I mean.) Osegueda will probably laugh at that comparison.
Otherwise, from start to finish, Out of the Darkness kicks serious metal ass. It’s an unexpected pleasure of traditional metal genius. ASoT can be fervent and blistering as on Murderous Horde, epic and inspiring as on Calat Alhambra, or unexpected and glorious on Discovery. Then they bring the groove (and psychotic girlfriend) on the catchy and fun, Kill That Bitch. Throughout Osegueda shows her effortless vocal strength, control, and range; take note of how easily she dials it down on the ballad, This Too Shall Pass. Look out boys, the next great metal singer is here.

Formerly known as Big Heat, Stygmata and Stygmata IV. Power Metal, the best heavy band in Austria. Melodically unconventional and slightly gloomy Heavy. Music sounds at ease and virtuosity, without any apparent effort on the part of musicians. The keys are used only where necessary to create a gothic sound effects, the same goes for guitars and other instruments. Simultaneous play all the musicians often gives rise to unusual combinations of sound in the original arrangements. A ‘INRI’ and ‘Gethsemane’ from the famous rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar sound to truly mature and tragic and are able to delight the most demanding audiophile. The epic song ‘Fool IY’ is a mixture of original apocalyptic visions with the motives of early Black Sabbath. ‘Pain’ captivates his audience enlightened, and at the same time anxious sadness. Tribute to traditional Heavy musicians give to the cover versions of Iron Maiden ’22 Acacia avenue ‘, is almost indistinguishable from the original.

Halloween — and no kids, not the once Kiske-led Helloween — have just released their fifth studio album in their 27 years of existence. Titled Terrortory, the album somehow picks up where they left off with classics like Victims of the Night and Don’t Metal With Evil. Hailing from Detroit and obviously topically influenced by the likes of Alice Cooper, Halloween plays a unique amalgam of NWOBHM intertwined with good ol’ fashioned American Classic Metal. There’s also Doom elements inside the interwoven tapestries of the sonic nightmares they lure you into, making Terrortory one of those albums impossible to say “they sound just like (some freakin’ other band).”
How else would you want this album to begin with besides “Traipsing Through the Blood?” Before you get off track and think it’s a murderous winter serial killer song, it’s actually … an uplifting call to arms, a Marine-like “seize the day” anthem that belies the visceral title. “Why do we never care, until it’s way too late? Why do we waste our time; we play with fate.” The lyrical content is a query into cowardice, the sin of hesitation, of self-apathy. With the serrated riffing from guitarist Don Gurrier, the machine-gun like unforgiving rhythm section, and vocalist Brian Thomas’ foreboding and damning delivery … the guys set the bar unbelievably high with this opener.
The title track “Terrortory” nearly holds up against “Traipsing Through the Blood.” The galloping guitar riffs are the most mesmerizing ingredient in this concoction. Although simple, like an AC/DC riff, it’s implants itself into your brain tissue and becomes impossible to remove even as you move on to the rest of the story.

Reunited heavy metal band SLEEPY HOLLOW will release its new album,“Skull 13”, on March 23 via Pure Steel Records and High Roller Records. The effort will be released on vinyl (limited 500 copies) throughHigh Roller and on CD/DDL through Pure Steel.
SLEEPY HOLLOW will film a video for the song “Spiral Effect” on location in Middletown, Delaware between February 2 and February 3. The clip will make its online debut on the day of the CD’s release.
An album release party is currently in the works for Saturday, March 24. Details for the event will be made available soon. A tour of the Midwest is currently in the final stage of negotiations and will be announced soon.

The band is currently working on an 8 panel digipack with 20 page booklet. As of today you can check out 3
complete tracks from their debut album. A Song For You, Doubt and The Ethereal Dream.
“34613” was recorded on a song-by-song basis (early 2007 through late 2010). It was recorded by different engineers and in different locations around the world (Norway, USA, Finland & Germany).
Mixing was performed during this 3,5 year period and mastering in Dec. 2010. All the mixing and mastering were handled by Colin Davis at Imperial Mastering (Pacheco, California). Produced by Trond Nicolaisen, Andreas Stenseth and Tomorrow’s Outlook.
