Xander Demos is a high-energy rock and metal guitar player from Pittsburgh, PA. He currently fronts his own solo band, as well as playing lead guitar for Pittsburgh’s favorite party rock outfit, Into The Arena. Xander performs in excess of 100 times a year, and he is active in recording collaborations with artists all over the world. Xander plays guitars from Suhr, McNaught and Conklin, with whom he has endorsement deals. His endorsement from these guitar companies is a testament to his impressive skills and his deep commitment to playing the best guitars in the world.

Growing up in the decade of decadence, Xander has been a big fan of everything from pop-metal, Top-40, thrash metal, progressive rock and even dance-related music. As long as there was a hook or a melody, he picked up on it. Xander’s main influences are Shawn Lane, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker, Neal Schon, Michael Romeo and John Sykes.

Xander’s style ranges from the beautifully melodic to the jaw-droppingly insane. His playing encompasses much of what he has learned and absorbed from other players over the years. One constant in his music is a focus on strong guitar melodies. Xander is currently working on the full-length follow-up to his EP “Road To Guitarcadia,” which is being mixed by CJ Snare of Firehouse; an instructional DVD; performing with his two live bands every week; and passing on his passion for guitar by giving in person and online instructions to eager students.

Recently, Xander has been making quite the name for himself and his solo band by appearing as support for acts like UFO, Lizzy Borden, Kip Winger, Neil Zaza and Dio Disciples. He recently had the #1 Metal and Progressive music video on Myspace, with the photo montage clip of his song, “Chase the Sun.” It is the follow-up video to another #1–his current single, “Right Angles.” That single is receiving critical praise and worldwide acceptance by fans and radio, alike. Xander has recently been featured on The Real Radio Show with AJ Pero of Twisted Sister, Steve Vai’s GuitarTV.com, GuitarWorld.com, Hair Metal Mansion, Iron City Rocks, and many other top rock and metal shows and websites. Recently nominated for Best Guitarist, 2011 Iron City Rocks Music Awards, Xander’s music will also appear on two upcoming major compilation releases, Liberty N Justice’s “Cigar Chronicles” and Raging Storm Records’ “Night Of the Living Shred,” as well as the new Ged Ryland solo CD, due in early 2012. Xander also recently joined James Rivera’s Sabbath Judas Sabbath tribute band, which will tour on the east coast of the US this year.

In addition to these accomplishments, Xander is an avid animal lover. Always looking for projects that will aid these beautiful creatures, Xander donated a portion of his EP sales to various animal charities.

Xander plays: V-Picks, the Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra as well as Hughes and Kettner amps, ISP Guitar Systems and Suhr Guitars, Amps & Effects, McNaught Guitars, Conklin Guitars and John Dixon Cases. Many of Xander’s guitars are outfitted with EMG pickups and accessories. He exclusively uses the FloydUpgrades tremolos or the GraphTech LB-63 piezo-equipped Floyd tremolo.

OPERA DIABOLICUS – 1614 (2012)

Posted on March 14, 2012 in Heavy Metal |Power Metal by Alex F
Tags:
Described as opera doom-rock, 1614 by Opera Diabolicus is a dark and theatrical musical piece delivered by the wicked minds of Swedish composer/musician David Grimoire and lyricist Adrian de Crow.

The inspiration for the band came in 2006 after Grimoire and de Crow witnessed a stage play of Umberto Eco’s book The Name of the Rose. Soon after, the duo set out to create a theatrical rock opera based on the same kind of story. The music is a combination of Candlemass-esque riffs, Therion-like dynamics and King Diamond-ish theatrical atmospheres.

Guest musicians featured are Snowy Shaw (Therion, King Diamond), Mats Leven (Therion, Yngwie Malmsteen), Niklas Isfeld (Dream Evil), Jake E (Amaranthe, Dreamland) and Camilla Alisander-Ason on soprano vocals.

The album is dramatic, mysterious, atmospheric, epic and slightly demented. It’s like Phantom Of The Operameets Jesus Christ Superstar. There are operatic choirs and orchestral arrangements similar to something Therion would pull off. The production has an organic and robust sound, due to producer Andy LaRocque.

Shaw’s drumming is pretty spectacular, as is the rest of the band’s musical prowess. The riffs are like chugging razors and the overall atmosphere is eerie and evil. The album is loaded with melodic interludes, tasteful guitar leads, opera/choir segments, eerie piano melodies, demonic growls, evil laughs and angelic harmonies.

The 8 tracks that grace the CD are long, with the exception of the short intro. The first proper song after the intro is the 10 minute “The Gates,” which is a great introduction to Opera Diabolicus’ sinister world. “Blood Countess Bathory” is a cinematic extravaganza with its grandiose sound and epic atmosphere.

Even with the lengthy songs, the album flows nicely like a dramatic opera, movie or play. The music and lyrics suck you in and you’ll be hanging onto every word. 1614 has lots of twists and turns, a good story line, evil sounding music, great vocalists and musicians. You really can’t go wrong with Opera Diabolicus’ diabolical debut album.

ANGEL WITCH – AS ABOVE, SO BELOW 2012

One of the flag-bearers of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal in its early stages, Angel Witch is a band that started out as far back as 1977. The South London-based outfit released three studio albums “Angel Witch”, “Screamin’ ‘n’ Bleedin’” and “Frontal Assault” in the 80?s, out of which the self-titled release is considered by many as a cult classic in this genre.

But then they faced a series of problems due to which they disappeared from the scene. Guitarist, singer and chief songwriter Kevin Heybourne recently reformed the band as a trio, with Andrew Prestidge on drums and Will Palmer on bass, while Bill Steer of Carcass fame is handling the duties of live second guitarist. They are now ready with the fourth Angel Witch studio album “As Above, So Below”, the first release after a gap of 26 long years. As someone who holds traditional heavy metal very close to heart, I must say I’m delighted to witness the rebirth of Angel Witch. Now, the only remaining question is, whether the album has actually turned out to be any good. The answer is emphatically in the affirmative.

Interestingly, even though all eight tracks on here are completely fresh releases, the album combines old and new incarnations of Angel Witch. Two of the tracks, “Dead Sea Scrolls” and “Witching Hour” date back to the band’s 1983-84 sessions, and two other tracks “Guillotine” and “Into The Dark” are even older. The remaining four tracks are newly written, though. These newly created tunes sound very much like what you’d expect from Angel Witch, but they are clearly different from the older tunes, which is only a natural thing.

Because of the vast number of years spanned by the album, the ordering of these tracks was very crucial, and I’m happy with the way the new tunes are intertwined with the older ones, giving the album the flow it should have to keep the listener’s attention throughout its 50-minute duration.

The album had me instantly hooked right from its first note, and other than a couple of brief segments here and there, it never let slip of its grip on me. These tunes exemplify the endearing qualities of traditional heavy metal, but in addition, they exude the uniquely dark aura of Angel Witch’s music, something that has always separated them from other bands in the NWOBHM movement. While I prefer and recommend listening to this album in its entirety, “Into The Dark” is the track that intrigued and impressed me the most on this release. This vintage tune combines classic rock with straight up traditional heavy metal, and its last couple of minutes can only be best described as a style that eventually evolved into thrash metal.

Credit obviously goes to Kevin Heybourne for recreating Angel Witch from the ashes and coming up with such an amazing album, but I would also like to give massive props to Metal Blade Records and Rise Above Records for supporting old school metal bands such as Angel Witch, and ensuring that this release sees the light of day. It’s important for the sake of traditional heavy metal that Angel Witch continues to make records, in the process not only putting forth their own music to the masses, but also inspiring and influencing a whole new generation of musicians.

BLAZE BAYLEY – King Of Metal(2012)

NOW!NEW ALBUM!

British heavy metal singer Blaze Bayley (WOLFSBANE, ex-IRON MAIDEN).

When asked about the recording process for his new album, “The King Of Metal”Blaze said, “I don’t like to spend a lot of time in the studio, I don’t feel it’s a very creative environment. I like to spend most of my time on an album in the writing process and the composing. I feel that’s the bit that really counts. I’m always thinking of the audience, the fans and how I’m going to perform the songs live.”

When asked if he could offer any insight as to what the new album will sound like, Blaze said, “It’ll be a bit different to what I’ve done before because I’m producing it. There will be a lot of heavy metal, as you would expect from a Blaze Bayley album. We decided to have no rules; if we feel something is appropriate to sing or play, we will. It’s all about the vibe and passion. I’m very hopeful it will turn out to be my best work.”

You can listen to the entire interview using the SoundCloud player below.

Blaze has announced that he will be accompanied by the following musicians on his upcoming “King Of Metal” tour:

Matteo “Lehmann” Grazzini (NEURASTHENIA) – Bass
Claudio Tirincanti – Drums
Andrea Neri (ASTARTE SYRIACA) – Guitar
Thomas Zwijsen (NYLON MAIDEN) – Guitar

Bayley is currently at Fear Studio in Ravenna, Italy recording his new studio album, “The King Of Metal”, for a spring release. A European headlining tour in support of the CD will kick off in early March in Belgium.

In a recent interview with Metal Blast, Bayley stated about “The King of Metal”, “This album is a bit more back towards my classic metal style; it’s closer to the ‘Silicon Messiah’ and ‘Tenth Dimension’ albums. Although I didn’t plan it that way, this is how it has worked out. . . I’ve been working very closely with a young guitar player called Thomas Zwijsen, who has co-written most of the songs, and it has worked very well. Now, the title track, ‘The King Of Metal’, is dedicated to the fans, because they are the real kings of metal. Without the fans, there’s no heavy metal, and I think that people trivialize that and even disrespect heavy metal fans, compared to fans of pop or jazz. I’ve called the album ‘The King Of Metal’ as a tribute to heavy metal fans, thanks to whom it has been possible for me to have such a wonderful career and spend my life as a professional singer.”

Blaze last year parted ways with the rest of his band in order to pursue a career as a solo artist and the lead singer of WOLFSBANE. He explained the decision by saying that “the mental, financial and emotional strain of keeping the BLAZE BAYLEY band together has proven to be too much for me and has taken a terrible toll on my mental health. . . It has been an upsetting, frustrating and sad time because the BLAZE BAYLEY band will not be going on any more, but it is also for me a huge relief and a time to look forward.”
