Hawkwind – Onward (2012)

Posted on May 5, 2012 in Progressive Rock by

To be released on April 30 via Eastworld Recordings.

If Pink Floyd were always just businessmen in loonpants, Hawkwind really did appear to live the dream – or was it the nightmare? The early Seventies people’s band looked as though they permanently camped out, though live at least they weren’t easy to see: just masses of tangled hair, glimpsed through flickering strobes and acid-fuelled projections, their music a wind tunnel of remorseless two-chord riffing. Indeed, while “Silver Machine”, their one hit single, is a true rock’n’roll classic, Hawkwind’s albums always seemed the least reason to get excited about them, compared to freakin’ out at their gigs, trying to get arrested with them or fantasising about their über-voluptuous dancer Stacia. Anyone who was into Hawkwind “just for the music” was missing the point.

My first memory goes back in the 60’s! A beautiful book illustrated in black and white about the mysterious King Arthur… For a child this character is the best! As all the boys at the same age, I dreamed to be this Child King that can brandish Excalibur. The girls are much more stupid! What an idea wanting to be a princess in love with two guys on the same time, ah la la it is really a girl thing! (Laughs)
MARTIN BARRE FROM JETHRO TULL: My middle name is Lancelot so as a school child I was very familiar with King Arthur legend and I knew a lot about his story, and I ‘ve read it in the past but I haven’t heard about it since. It’s a very strong story, very present with its castle, its domain in north Devon supposedly.

V?s?ero – Subkr?ut: U-B?ats Willk?mmen Hi?r (2012)

VESPERO got together as a quartet (Arkady Fedotov – vocals, bass, flute, synths; Valentin Rulev – violin, synths; Ivan Fedotov – drums, percussion; Alexander Kuzovlev – guitar, bass, synths) in Astrakhan (south of Russia) 2003 on the common interest in playing psychedelic music. Later Natalya Tjurina (vocals) joined, and the band moved into more progressive rock-related areas. As their Moscow fellows KAFTAN SMEKHA, VESPERO are deeply influenced by avant theatre and experimental poetry. Since the very first demos their sound has been influenced by GONG, early FLOYD, FAUST and related bands from that era. Highly recommended for all fans of these (and beyond!).

Citizen Cain – Skies Darken (2012)

Posted on May 2, 2012 in Progressive Rock by

This is Citizen Cain’s sixth and most powerful release yet, and their first album for over 10 years. Citizen Cain originate from Scotland, and feature Stewart Bell (keyboards/drums), Cyrus (bass/lead vocals) and Phil Allen (guitars/backing vocals). Cyrus’s vocals will always be reminiscent of Peter Gabriel, yet the band sound fresh and original on today’s prog scene, going to places in their music that few band’s can. Yes, there are the occasional Genesis references, but Skies Darken pushes the boundaries further than on any other release, maintaining melodies throughout. It’s a dark album that draws you in, and holds you there…highly recommended!
