KADAVAR are the new sensation in the currently extremely vital Retro Rock / Doom / Psychedelic Rock genre. The Berlin-based trio consists of Wolf (guitar / vocals), Mammoth (bass) and Tiger (drums). The band survived the occult psychedelic proto-hard rock and metal of the early 70s, a la Black Sabbath, Pentagram, or Hawkwind. In early March, the self-titled debut album of the power trio was a bombshell into the scene: Published on This Charming Man Records and the American cult label Tee Pee Records, the vinyl record in the first two months sold after the release of three editions (3,000 copies). Some concept albums are more fun to listen to if you just tune out the concept. That’s the case with Spiritual Revolution, a 69-minute mish-mash of neo-progressive rock, dark metal, Celtic influences, brief spoken-word narration and sounds effects, and even Duran Duran references. The fact this Italian band can hold all of that together musically is impressive enough; I’m not even going to try to comment on how faithful it is to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, which inspired Spiritual Revolution (and which I’ve never read).
