Propane Propane – Indigo (2012)
Our four Swedish friends from Propane Propane already conquered our hearts and minds with their self-titled album from 2009. Filled with heavy riffs, loads of psychedelics and grinding bass-lines it was as tasty as it gets. With their new album Indigo however, they are upping the ante. Something seems to be at stake here; as if a higher force has taken control of their instruments and guides them along a path of excellence. It sends shivers up your spine and makes you blood tingle in weird anticipation. It is as heavy and crushing as their earlier work but with more restraint and measured deliverance. It might be the substitute guitar player or it might be their growth as song smithies; but their massive fuzz sound, intense structuring and brisk but lethargic rhythms have turned into a cerulean monstrous beast. One that eats tasty things for lunch… Errgh?! Propane Propane, that savory shit that propels!

The musicians on this album are very good, and there are some very good guests, too. They include Pontus Norgren (Hammerfall), Markus Sigfridsson (7Days, Harmony & Dark Water), Andreas Passmark (Royal Hunt & Narnia), CJ Grimmark (Narnia, Rob Rock & Full Force), and most notably Thomas Vikström (Therion, Candlemass,7Days & Mehida). Besides these great voices, the instrumental sections stand out, too. Both the keyboards and guitars mix very well throughout the whole album and especially well on “To Love and Forget” and “Send Me Out”. The guitar solo near the end of the latter really exemplifies great musicianship and control. These two elements are what really make this album stand out a bit more than the rest of the field. While most power metal is mainly a chorus and then maybe some solos and such, Eye of the Storm mixes these elements around to create a unique yet constant feel. Through the 50 some minutes that this album lasts it does tend to get a little repetitive in the middle and towards the end.

Nods to Free, Humble Pie, even Trapeze can be sussed out in the mix, but at the end of the day, Real Women is straight-up Mount Carmel all the way. Searing leads, smokey vocals, thundering rhythms, cascading drums, hyperbolic hyperbole… it’s all here. Mount Carmel brings back the spirit of 1973 like no one else. The only difference now is better weed and shittier barbiturates. It’s hands-down pure Rock, no frills. Nary a retro contrivance is to be heard. These guys live it for real. Honest. So climb on board with Real Women and see what you’ve been missing. The results are astounding.
