The Trial/Kory Clarke – 1984 (2012)

Posted on March 9, 2012 in Hard Rock by Alex F

In 1984, vocalist Kory Clarke (WARRIOR SOUL) recorded an album in LA with producer/songwriter Kim Fowley (THE RUNAWAYS, Destroyer-era KISS). The album was lost for 28 Years, but it has been found and brought back to life. This legendary Detroit band, THE TRIAL, will finally be heard.

The most important thing to know about The Trial – this remarkable, squalling, sneering, despairing riot of art rock – is that this is the proto-Warrior Soul. The place, for Kory Clarke, that it all truly began.

By the time Warrior Soul started swinging blows of timely warning from the shadows of New York City, Kory had abandoned his drum kit and was standing up front – all hair, raised fists and metallic street poetry. Nothing has changed. Those that truly supported him then truly support him now. But how many of those people are aware of The Trial, the origins of Warrior Soul and an important band and album in its own right? Even the most ardent fan probably only knows of The Trial by name, and fewer still will have ever heard their music.

That time has now ended, with the release of this extraordinary and pivotal album, a release that quite incredibly hails from 1983, not merely years before the rise of grunge and alternative metal, but even pre-dating the Hollywood hair metal era that that scene usurped. If you wanted any further evidence of Kory’s artistry and forward thinking, here it is.

Confrontational and steeped in reverb, The Trial’s music stalks the dark underground channels between the first Warrior Soul album and classic Killing Joke. “Where do I fit in?” roars Kory in 9th Grade, the start of a quest that continues today. Songs like this, the fiery New Rock and the deliciously cynical Human Beings, fight the fight for the underdog and the disenfranchised, the self-proclaimed losers that don’t fit. Drenched in psychedelic, seething guitars – a sound familiar to those who freaked out to Warrior Soul’s Trippin On Ecstasy – the canvas is colored in dark hues. It is propelled by Kory’s exhausting rhythmic barrage and, of course, his voice – a voice that sounds like the last voice at the end of the last bit of everything. Last decade, dead century anyone?

It’s impossible to listen to this decades-delayed work and not picture the doubtless head-fucking spectacle of the band playing live. Kory at the back, singing and playing drums simultaneously (no small achievement in itself!) but projected to the audience on big screens at the front. Footage interspersed with disturbing images of corpses, of porn and American TV advertisements. This already was an artist seeking to challenge people’s preconceptions, to disturb, probe and ask questions. The wicked riffs and anti-establishmentarianism that pummels “Ruler” along is yet another sign of things to come. The skittering guitars and shout-out-loud hooks of “Skeleton Dance” follow suit.

Much has been written, not least of all by this writer, about how Kory Clarke and Warrior Soul were among the most important artists to emerge in metal’s turn-of-the-Nineties rebirth, and that by rights they should also have stood alongside its biggest selling. No feeling of injustice, however keenly felt, can ever re-write history but, satisfyingly, this early project confirms that we were right all the time. For Warrior Soul fans past and present, it’s time to stand Trial.

Los Angeles, CA – January 3rd, 2011 – Dirtbag / ILG / Warner Music Group is proud to announce the signing and debut release of recording artist Scarlet Haze. The band will be hitting the road in cities all over the US this Spring and Summer in support of the effort.Tour dates coming soon. The bands’ new album One Bad Bitch features performances by members of Guns N Roses and Nine Inch Nails. The first single “Reach Down” will be impacting radio on January 11th. The band is comprised of lead vocalist Kat Perkins and touring musicians Eric Warner (guitar), Steve McClurg (bass) and Peter Day Elledge (drums). The band tours extensively and has shared the stage with many national touring artists including Bon Jovi, Candlebox, Saving Abel, Vince Neil, Blackstone Cherry, Rev Theory and Bret Michaels of Poison. Kat’s sultry onstage persona is equally as dangerous as her music. Her attention to stage detail, musicianship, vocal ability and undeniable sexuality, both in attire and music, leave her fans both teased and pleased simultaneously.”Rock, like Scarlet Haze, is a full package,” says Kat, “it’s not just for the ears but the eyes as well – people just want to get off at a live show – and we aim to please!”
Scarlet Haze unleashes a truly fearless brand of hard rock on her Dirtbag / ILG / Warner debut. “Playing it safe is not something I back,” states Scarlet Haze lead singer Kat Perkins, “rock music is supposed to be dangerous.” Indeed, the band’s debut single “Reach Down,” which blends a hard edge melodic hook with sexy self pleasuring, is sonic proof of Scarlet Haze’s assault on safe music. “Reach Down,” says Kat, “is reactive and universal in subject matter because of its truth – everyone does it and that includes females.”

Scarlet Haze has amassed an impressive and loyal fan base, a who’s who of supporting musicians, a top-notch promotion / label team and is co managed by multi-platinum recording artist Disturbed’s bass player John Moyer-via Silver-Tongue Management.

GAVIN HARRISON & 05RIC – THE MAN WHO SOLD HIMSELF 2012

Band Gavin Harrison & 05Ric
Info: UK
Info: The Man Who Sold Himself
Style: Eclectic Prog
Years: 2012
Info: MP3 CBR 192 Kbs
Info: 59 MB(+3% ?? ?????.)

The Man Who Sold Himself is the third album from the collaboration between Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison and 05Ric, the multi-instrumentalist, singer and extended range bass player. The album will be released on Kscope on February 27th 2012 as a 2 disc set, featuring the album on CD as well as a 5.1 mix on DVD, allowing fans to enjoy the intricate complexities of the album in full surround glory.

In addition to being voted best Progressive Drummer four years in a row in the Modern Drummer Magazine’s readers poll. He was also recently invited to perform on the David Letterman show as part of his Drum Solo week (see below).

Best known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Gavin has also played extensively with King Crimson as well as providing session drumming for a host of respected artists but his work with 05Ric has allowed him to develop some of the work that he has created outside these projects.

05Ric uses his voice, extended range bass and guitars to turn his love of sound into sonic tapestries. His vocals, virtuoso playing and a chance meeting between the two has led to one of the most interesting and complex musical collaborations in recent years.

The union of 05Ric’s distinctive style with Gavin’s extraordinary drumming has already produced some unique results but Gavin has stated that with The Man Who Sold Himself‘we have continued to push the boundaries of our rhythmic and harmonic possibilities, I believe these are some of the wildest rhythmic concepts that I have ever conjured and 05Ric has snaked his bass around.’

05Ric goes on to explain that lyrically the album deals with themes “based on the greed of the financial global crisis, the empty shallowness of goal seeking without passion or for its own sake and the destructive force left behind by selfish behaviour – but the central character through heightened awareness and right action discovers his true calling.”

The album, which was written over the last two years and recorded in mid-2011, is the duo’s first release since Circles in 2009. Circles was described by Classic Rock Prog as ‘bristling with instrumental technique and firepower… it is peppered with a pulsating, muscular funk that pushes through generic barriers to create its own unique space.’

Steve Hogarth & Richard Barbieri – Not The Weapon But The Hand (2012)

Kscope is pleased to announce the release of Not The Weapon But The Hand, the new album from Steve Hogarth and Richard Barbieri. The album will be available from February 27th 2012.

Hogarth is best known as the frontman of Marillion, the progressive rock legends that he joined in 1989, following spells in The Europeans and How We Live. In addition to the 12 studio albumsMarillion have released in this time, he has also recorded and toured as a solo artist, under the moniker H.

In recent years Richard Barbieri has been a core member ofPorcupine Tree playing keyboards on all the band’s albums since 1993 as well as releasing two solo albums, Things Buried andStranger Inside. Prior to this, it was in the new-wave pioneers Japanthat he originally came to prominence, helping to create the groundbreaking synthesiser sound that defined the band and influenced the likes of The Human League, Duran Duran, Gary Numan, Talk Talk, Kate Bush and a whole raft of other artists, including Hogarth.

The band also influenced Hogarth, at that point playing keyboards in The Europeans; ‘when I was in my mid-twenties Japan’s ‘Tin Drum’ album was a firm favourite and truly a groundbreaking work… Japan were one of those rare bands where each musician seemed to have reinvented his instrument overnight. Central to this sound was the unmistakable synthesiser programming/playing of my, now, chum Mr B.’

LANDMARQ – ENTERTAINING ANGELS [LIMITED EDITION] (2012)

Landmarq are a UK-based neo-progressive rock band. Since forming in 1990, they have so far released six albums, two of which were recorded live at various concerts in the UK and elsewhere inEurope.

Initially signing to a Dutch record company, SI Records, then forming their own label, Synergy Records, the band have established themselves within the world of progressive rock, though their style may also extend into album-oriented rock, melodic rock, hard rock and even a slightly jazz edge.

Vocalist Damian Wilson left the band after three very well received albums to concentrate on his solo career and the band found a replacement in Ian ‘Moon’ Gould. ‘Moon’ spent a year with the band, playing various gigs in the UK and Holland, before deciding to move on. It was at this point that Landmarq decided to go for a radical change to their sound and recruited the long-time friend of the band, Tracy Hitchings, who formally sang with Quasar and did their first vinyl album, “The Lorelei” and has done two albums with Clive Nolan’s Strangers on a Train – The Key Part I and The Key Part II and has done a solo album with Mr. Nolan called From Ignorance to Ecstasy and before joining Landmarq she had done sessions with the likes of Steve Hackett (Genesis), Nik Turner (Hawkwind) and a tour with John Wetton (Asia/King Crimson) and has worked with Rick and Oliver Wakeman (Yes), Clive Nolan, and Bob Catley (Magnum) on Jabberwocky and on Nolan/Wakeman’s Hound of the Baskervilles, which also featured English actor Robert Powell, who narrated the album.

Landmarq have played concerts in the UK, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Poland, Italy, the US and Mexico; both as support and as headliners at various festivals and music venues. The band have worked with many well-known artists including Marillion, John Wetton, Steve Hackett, Hugh McDowell, Nik Turner (Hawkwind), Annie Haslam (Renaissance), IQ, Pendragon, Arena and Suzi Quatro.

Kory Clarke – Opium Hotel II (2011)

Posted on February 12, 2012 in Hard Rock,Rock by Alex F

One of Kory Clarke’s paintings featured in the artwork on this here cd is a 5×3 canvas of the Union Jack with the slogan ‘God Shag The Queen’ emblazoned across it. That’s how punk rock he is and how much he doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks. Always passionate and controversial whether it be his music, his art or his political views the Warrior Soul frontman has never been one to stand in the shadows, preferring to shout from the highest point to anyone who will listen.

‘Opium Hotel II’ is a collaboration with some of Kory’s friends and artists such as Gary Hood who wrote the fantastic title track from the first ‘Opium Hotel’ album. He also wrote and played guitar here on the similar ‘Masquerade Party’ a simple, almost desolate sounding acoustic track that puts across a feeling of loneliness, it stands apart from the rest as did ‘Opium Hotel’ on the original.

‘Opium Hotel II’ like its predecessor is an outlet for all the stuff that doesn’t fit in the Warrior Soul shaped hole, more experimental and arty. Lyrically he is still spitting at the USA and the government, that will never change until they make him president I reckon.

The album opens with ‘A Message From Mr. Harris’ a Government public announcement tape about recognising the early warning signs of drug dependancy, this segues into ‘Best Birthday Ever’ the first of several of his trademark spoken word pieces, this one shows the more gentle side of Kory’s lyrics

First song proper ‘America’s New Cunt’ is a verbal tirade describing Corporate America as a 200 year old bikini wearing slut,”Who’s the new slut, America’s new cunt” is the refrain, guaranteeing Kory no new friends in the government, not that he would want any! It ends with a “come on…CUNT” – who else can get away with stuff like that?

‘Kiss On This’ harks back to ‘Space Age Playboys’ era Warrior Soul; a fantastic slice of sleazy, punk rock it’s fast and furious – I can listen to stuff like this all day. Lucky for me there is more of the same in the shape of ‘Super Drug’; incidentally Kory plays the drums on both these tracks. ‘Junky Stripper’ is a dumb ass rock song, with a Rob Zombie like vibe, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Of the spoken word material ‘I’m Your Pilot’ stands out, with trippy beats as his back up Kory takes the helm and addresses his passengers – take his trip over Manhattan if you dare; let’s just say it’s an unnerving, bumpy ride.

The atmospheric and acoustic driven ‘It’s My Time’, with its short and sweet twin guitar solo, and the tripped out ‘Painting Space Ships’, are more like vintage Warrior Soul to me. The only oddity that doesn’t really do it for me at this early stage of listening is ‘Paradigm’, but only time will tell.

The production varies from track to track but it doesn’t feel disjointed, it’s a departure from the Warrior Soul albums for sure. An interesting collection of material; I guess it’s a snapshot in a year of the life of Kory Clarke, and one that is well worth exploring.

On the cover of this cd it says “Parental Advisory: This Recording Contains Art” – a subtle dig at the powers that be and freedom of speech, it sure does contain art in many forms. Fans of Kory Clarke will love it as will fans of Warrior Soul, many others may scratch their heads and say “what the fuck?”…job done I believe.

Energetic, powerfull and fresh killer rock with big danish balls of dynamite that explodes in the ear canals, was my first impression and feeling when I listened to BTB’s album “Nothing Reamains”. They do it with a great dose of attitude and the tight sound is close to knock me out. Martin Larsen on vocals sounds like he is a younger brother of Jesper Binzer in D-A-D.

Easy listening, high tempo and straight forward rock with nice peaks there Niels Hyttel plays some heavy riffs and solos and in my ears does the hard hitting drummer Simon Brøchner make the biggest difference compared to related artists. I’ve got a hard time to pick any favourite tracks, because they have really put up 10 mega hard songs and the guys should be commended for that.

Every minute of the album is filled with great melodies, nice tempo changes, hard rock guitars and tight wheezy delicious rock vocals. The production is perfect and the sound is pure as spring water with whisky on a Friday night. My mind fills with energy and positive feelings when I listen to “Nothing Remains” and that’s the spirit and what it’s all about with rock music!

BTB is a band to keep in mind for the metal festival booking staffs across Europe, this is a coming band with both ambitions and talent to be another big danish music export, just like Volbeat, Royal Hunt and D-A-D. Thumbs up!

Bullet Train Blast is: Martin Larsen – Vocals, Niels Hyttel – Lead Guitar, Steff Gunn – Guitar, Morten Olesen – Bass and Simon Brøchner on drums.
