Brent Vallefuoco – Higher (2011)
Inspired by Great Science-Fiction films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, Akira and Blade Runner, this album is a cosmic-themed Space-Rock adventure fit to be a soundtrack to a voyage into the world beyond the world.
Inspired by Great Science-Fiction films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, Akira and Blade Runner, this album is a cosmic-themed Space-Rock adventure fit to be a soundtrack to a voyage into the world beyond the world. Complimented by thoughtful lyrics and musical influences from several Progressive-Rock artists and film soundtracks, this album is an experience to be had.
I originally planned this album to be a Concept Album with a story about a distressed child desperately trying to fit in with a world he hated and could not understand, but as time went on, I became more interested in giving this album a Science-Fiction theme. So the only real possible concept linking the whole album together is its adventurous feel, but it really isn’t a Concept Album.
While there isn’t any real link connecting the whole album together, there are two common ideas; the nature of the universe and the nature of family.
The first track on the album, “Gods In Hell (Intro)” presents a metaphoric replacement of Nature and Analog music with Machinery and Electronic music. It is meant to lead into “Gods In Hell,” which discusses that due to technology, humanity has changed into something else and lost its true nature. Also dealing with the universe, “Akira,” discusses the theme of the Universe being cyclic in several ways, which is also a prominent theme in Katsuhiro Otomo’s Anime masterpiece of the same name.
The other thematic group of songs in the album is “Hope In Desperation”, “Who Are You?” and “A Doll’s House.” The first song, the most personal on this album, is about my unborn brother, who died through miscarriage after 7 months of my mother’s pregnancy. After having ill feelings about having a new member of the family, I felt disgusted at myself once he had died. I found myself wondering what it would’ve been like if I would’ve known him, feeling more remorse the more I wondered. I decided to channel those feelings into the song. The theme of the next song, “Who Are You?”, is about the extreme limitations of communication. We can never truly know each other, because there is no way to communicate every experience an individual has had to another. All we can ever truly know about a person is their appearance, the things we are told about them (which may not even be true) and the things that we see them do. We can never truly know their thought process, their true feelings and everything that they’ve experienced. We can not even imagine the complexity of another human being. The final song in this group, “A Doll’s House”, combines these themes into one and states that the idea of family technically only exists in our minds, so families that do not get along well should not have to feel like they owe each other something. Rather, they should be able to go their separate ways and not have a commitment to each other.

Just like Steve Senes (also reviewed this month) Emanuele Perilli also releases an instrumental guitar album, however on three songs there is some vocals. “Manny” Perilli too wrote, arranged, and produced everything but released his debut not through a label and financed it himself. It is clearly all about the guitar playing for this Italian guitar teacher (who also is a sound engineer and graphic and web artist). The arrangements are put together with the accent on his playing, not too uncommon for an instrumental album, but on some songs the backing music sounds inferior to the guitar playing. Something one can see on many YouTube clips, a tape rolls and the relevant guitar player plays his part. Not so weird as one knows his guitar playing is recorded in the “Badroom studios”, the bedroom of “Manny” (nice wordplay by the way). Also Perilli explores more styles and genres en knows all the techniques, from speed picking, sweeping, legato and tapping until shredding, that is clear.
What should make, and keep, an instrumental album interesting are the melodies and colouring of the songs and that is well done by Manuele Perilli. Whether it is a heavy, funky song like ‘The Noise Of The Bliss’, a sensitive, atmospheric song like ‘Tears That Taste Of You’, a song that is being pushed forward by a disco like up-tempo beat like ‘Across The Universe’ or a heavy rock song like ‘The Truth’ (including speech from JFK), “Manny” gives them the needed, catchy melody, power when needed and colours them with lovely solo’s. ‘An Ivory Moon’, which starts and ends with the sound of crickets, sounds sweet as the summer and reminds of Joe Satriani, but that is more like a compliment. Perilli too dares to play a tropical reggae tune in ‘A Perfect Place’ with vocals by Rudy B. The song sounds like a mix between Santana and The Police and that too is not meant harmful. Strong debut album and – good – stuff for guitar players, or those who appreciate it.

Raven Quinn is a 26 year old singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. Quinn’s self-titled debut album was released digitally worldwide on her birthday, March 4th 2010 via all major digital music retailers (iTunes World Wide, MySpace Music, Rhapsody, Napster, eMusic, IMVU, Amazon/ Amazon UK, Lala, Shockhound, Amazon On Demand, LimeWire Store, Nokia, Zune). Due to overwhelming support from an ever growing legion of followers, Quinn’s debut skyrocketed to the number one position on Amazon’s “Movers and Shakers” chart- which charts Amazon’s fastest selling digital albums- and also held top 100 chart positions in Rock and MP3 albums in general, all within the first twelve hours of release. The success proved to be an unexpected victory and incredible birthday gift for the self-released indie artist.
The songs which appear on the disc, penned by Quinn and Juno Award winning producer & engineer Dan Brodbeck, range from dark and brooding goth rock tracks to light, ethereal, and angelic ballads. The album takes the listener on a very personal journey through Quinn’s psyche and vividly illustrates the darkness and light that each of us experience in life and that we all harbor within ourselves, while featuring the enormous instrumental talents of some of Quinn’s own childhood heroes: George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob, Souls of We) and Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Poe).
Quinn and Brodbeck were first introduced by close mutual friend and fellow artist/musician Dolores O’Riordan (The Cranberries) and the pairing proved to be quite a musical match, resulting in a continued creative connection. Since completion of Quinn’s debut, Brodbeck has resumed his role as producer and engineer for Quinn’s soon-to-be-released track “Catalyst” which was written and recorded for campaign use for Rover 4G -a high profile wireless internet provider. A music video for “Catalyst” is currently in pre-production and will be Quinn’s very first.
Legendary music trade Hits Magazine has praised Quinn for bringing “an edge to the singer/songwriter genre”, dubbed her a “rock goddess” and states that she is “an artist to watch in ’09/10.” Other recent accomplishments also include Quinn’s inclusion on the 2011 Grammy Award Ballot across multiple categories, the addition of three of her tracks (The Window, Decadence, and Catalyst) to Rock Band Network, and an artist sponsorship with Daisy Rock Guitars.
