Ned Doheny – The Darkness Beyond The Fire (2011-12)

Old Classic AOR connoisseurs already know NED DOHENY. His solo album ‘Hard Candy’ still remains as top favorite on many lists in the genre, and the follower ‘Prone’, though only released in Japan, was equally good.
Being absent in the business for 17-18 years, Ned is back with the new album “The Darkness Beyond The Fire”.

Doheny was under contract to a Japanese label in early ’90s, and the deal obligated him to deliver a final album. The tunes Ned wrote during that period were some of the most personal of his life, but the pressure to complete the album and the transformation he was undergoing obliged himself to release a body of work that was more demo than a finished product.
Thus, Ned revisted those tunes and re-recorded the whole thing including stellar musicians, with new arrangements and a polished production handled by himself.
The result is “The Darkness Beyond The Fire”, a classy West Coast / AOR recording.

The album takes off with “Between Two Worlds”, a superb breezy melodious track with an organic sound, driven by acoustic guitars, dreamy keyboards and using heavier, only male, top background vocalists: Sherwood Ball (Jay Graydon’s Airplay), Bryan Garofalo (Steve Perry Band), Joseph Williams (Toto) and himself, giving the song now a more depth and life-anchoring meaning.
“Perish The Thought” has a classic West Coast feel, rhythmically rich and deep, with closely arranged vocals supported by the great Maxine Lewis on the background.
On “Too Late For Love” and “Ghostdancer” he introduces some EWI winds of Steve Tavaglione to the arrangement, the background vocals are significantly reduced to avoid the sweetness, singing in a haunting manner coherently on both songs.
“The Secret Society Of Women” is incredibly smooth with a special bitter sounding concept, while “Love In The Rear View Mirror” has a more upbeat rhythm and a catchy percussion.

“Trail’s End” sounds much modern and really American, with a different approach than the rest of the tracks on the album. It’s one of the best and originally composed songs, but all are superbly written here, believe me.
“Life After Romance”, featuring Don Grusin’s acoustic piano, Sherwood Ball and Joseph Williams on backing vocals, has a romantic melancholy tone, and an exquisite, intimate lead vocal performance by Doheny. This is pure West Coast guys…
“In A Perfect World”, once written for a Japanese female vocal trio called Amazons released in 1995 with Doheny singing duet, seems to be the last song he has written and it is yet another everlasting love-affirming song, with a fantastic chorus.

For Ned Doheny his return to the music world took almost 20 years (a conflicting divorce and raise his son in-between) but well worth the wait.
“The Darkness Beyond The Fire” is the most personal album of his career, surely recorded in the way he wanted: with refined arrangements, a careful attention on every detail and a pristine production.
This is a beautifully crafted West Coast AOR album full of classic sounds, from an artist committed to his own style without care to what’s happening nowadays in music industry. “The Darkness Beyond The Fire” isn’t polluted by any actual trend, this is pure West Coast as it should be done.
If you hesitate to get it because you think this style is outdated, let me tell you, without imposing, that you’re terribly wrong… this music is pure class.
Buy it, and re-assure yourself that there are still genuine artists in this world. They need and deserve acknowledgment and applause.
“The Darkness Beyond The Fire” was originally released at the end of 2010 only in Japan, but it is available worldwide since the last month of 2011 with a slightly different cover artwork.
Highly Recommended.

Tower City – The Ones That Matter (2012)

TOWER CITY, the American trio who formed in 1988, are best known for their album ‘A Little Bit Of Fire’ which has a cult following amongst AOR loving fans worldwide, largely in Europe.

The album, recorded back in 1992 with the help of Mike Slamer (Streets, Steelhouse Lane, Seventh Key) features some of the best AOR / Melodic Rock songwriting you are ever likely to hear, sadly looked destined to never be heard, until the now defunct German label MTM Records released the album in 1996 gaining high praise to the band.
With the songs on that album having been written and recorded in the early nineties, by 1996, the band had since become known by the name Colorvine, which delivered a more progressive and alternative form of melodic rock that gained them a solid fan base within the USA.

Now here we are in 2011 and the music of Tower City will be heard in a way it never has before.
The band has remastered a selection of their best songs (including titles from the second ’98 album ‘All Or Nothing’), along with 4 new tracks that have been recorded in the last 7 years, entitled “The Ones That Matter”.

Saltis brothers said;
“We have never been inactive as musicians. Our music may not have been represented as we felt it should have the first time around.
We went back and looked at a lot of the tracks, picked some of our favorites, and revamped a collection that we could be proud of presenting to those listeners that still cared.
The 4 new tracks are representative of our growth together after the Tower City days.”

For me personally, Tower City’s music is littered with virtually everything that I love about the Melodic Rock / AOR genres.
Together with Steelhouse Lane, Tower City carried the flame during the second half of the nineties. In fact, both bands were somehow connected. Steelhouse Lane’s mastermind, Mike Slammer, helped this band in the artistic production department, songwriting and playing some guitars.
Tower City is a very, very good band, with a late ’80s MR/AOR arena style full of trademark hooks, lush melodies and monster choruses.
As brothers Saltis like to say: “Time passes, people change, but the good music remains!”
Highly Recommended.

Geoff Moore – Saying Grace (2011)

Posted on January 14, 2012 in Rock by Alex F
As it is with many singers/songwriters, our inspiration comes from the journeys we walk in life.  Never has this been truer for 25 year Compassion advocate, Grammy Nominated and Dove Award Winning artist – Geoff Moore.  After a 4 year hiatus from recording, Moore is back with a new album, Saying Grace.  From the beginning this album will embrace the listeners’ heart with Moore’s familiar storytelling way and raw melodic tones. The album opens with a song entitled “Believe”. It begins as a reflective piece which continuously builds instrumentally throughout the song. The message of the song will offer hope and assurance to all who at one time or another are faced with struggles and trials in life.  Easily an anthem song for this album. The title track “Saying Grace” gives the feeling as though you’re sitting down with the family for a time of prayer. This song has a slight country feel with harmonies and mandolin playing in the background throughout. ”The Wonder of Kindness” is another track with a country feel. Pure harmonies, tight acoustic work, tambourines and mandolin give this song a reflective feel. With words like  “The wonder of Your kindness is something I can’t earn,” reminds the listener of God’s great love for his children.

“Overwhelming Love” – a favorite of mine on this album. With lyrics that tear at your heart such as,  ”Let us be ruined by your overwhelming love“, and ”if we could see just one glimpse of who you are than we would be undone“. The song styling is driven by a contemporary rock beat with great guitar work throughout. This song truly speaks the heart of Moore when he states, “‘Saying Grace’ is an album about thankfulness. The last few years God has let me walk some hard roads with people I love. These songs were born of those journeys. My prayer is that they will be good traveling companions. I wrote them to encourage all our hearts that we are loved, and cared for. That on our best, or hardest, days we would be overwhelmed by God’s great love for us.”

Saying Grace released in August 2011. Certainly an album I would highly recommend.

Monte Pittman – Pain, Love & Destiny (2011)

Posted on December 24, 2011 in Rock by Alex F

Hello all! My name is Monte Pittman and I’m based out of Los Angeles.

I’m an independant artist making my upcoming album (tentatively titled “Pain, Love & Destiny”) on my own. Some of my friends have strongly suggested using Kickstarter as they have been successful with it themselves. Not only will this opportunity of raising money from fans, friends and family help me make this album, but it also lets whoever is giving a donation be a part of this experience.

This album features not only acoustic guitars and vocals, but drums, bass, electric guitars, keyboards (synths, piano, and strings) … and hopefully you.

One of the Incentives is for the person donating to sing as a backing vocalist on the album. One of the songs on the album (or last of 4) features a final chorus of as many people as I can get to sing with me. The idea is kind of like “We don’t need no education” from “Another Brick In The Wall” by Pink Floyd” or “Give Peace A Chance”.

You record your vocals – send them to me – I add you into the track. If you’re out of tune – there are ways of fixing that.

Other Incentives include a private show in your living room. Have some friends over, and we’ll play for you. Also, private guitar lessons both personally and online. Private lessons have to be in the Los Angeles or Southern California area. The online lessons (Skype) will allow all of my incredible fans from all over the world to be included. If anyone has any ideas for incentives, send them my way!

BADMOUTH – ‘T’ Part Three Of H.A.T.E (2011)

Posted on December 20, 2011 in Hard Rock by Alex F

Swedish hard rockers BADMOUTH are back again this year with a new EP entitled “T ; Part Three Of H.A.T.E”.
The guys have rocked the world with their critically acclaimed full length melodic hard rock album ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot’ (already presented on this blog).
” T ” is the 3rd part of a quadrology called H.A.T.E., where rock bands play their versions of songs written by Swedish singer-songwriter Sofia Talvik, a folk-rock oriented artist.
Badmouth has a very retro 80’s melodic hard rock style on their own material, but for these tracks they’ve gone more to the late seventies, with a rough sound and a classic hard rock attack.
I never heard the original folk versions, but the band has really made the songs their own, and trust me, here’s nothing folk related at all.
This is straight, in your face hard rock with melting guitar riffs, as heard on the fast paced “Dilusional” and “Circle Of Friends”.
Anyway, the characteristic ‘Badmouth sound’ is present on the catchy “To Watch The Bridges Burn” and the really interesting “Jonestown”, a tune with a very nice melodic line and radio-rock potential.

If you enjoyed Badmouth’s ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot’, this is a great opportunity to listen the band playing something different.
“T ; Part Three Of H.A.T.E” will please as well lovers of classy hard rock with strong riffage and attitude.
Despite the ugliest cover art in many years, “T” is filled with good rockin’ music to bang your head for a while.

03 – To Watch The Bridges Burn
04 – Jonestown

MAGO DE OZ – LOVE N’ OZ (2011)

Mago de Oz biography
MAGO DE OZ was founded in Madrid during 1989 by the drummer Txus, who recruited all other members until reach the first line-up, who lasted until 1995: Txus (drums), Mohamed (violin), Carlitos (guitar), Chema (guitar), Salva (bass) and Juanma (vocals). Then, Chema, Salva and Juanma left the band, being replace by Frank, Sergio and José, and these were the only changes since then. Combining in an unique way heavy metal, celt, folk and medieval music, the band became one of the most important Spanish bands. Their sound could be defined as mix between KANSAS, SKYCLAD, IRON MAIDEN and BLACKMORE’S NIGHT.

After first self-titled album, released in 1994, they released five more albums (including live “Folktergeist”). The double-CD “Finisterra”, with all keyboards and flutes arrangements, is considered a masterpiece. They also recorded versions (not simply covers) to songs from artists as RAINBOW, LED ZEPPELIN, KANSAS (a breathtaking Spanish version to “Dust in the Wind”), IRON MAIDEN and BARON ROJO.

If you’re looking for a pure prog band, you will be a little disappointed with MAGO DE OZ, but if you are looking for something else in metal, this band is what you need!

Cage – Supremacy Of Steel (2011)

Posted on December 9, 2011 in Heavy Metal |Power Metal by Alex F

  • Cage, San Diego’s self-professed American power metal kings, has returned with their sixth album, Supremacy Of Steel. Formed in 1992 during the outbreak of grunge, Cage remained true to their sound. Almost two decades later, Cage has maintained a classic heavy metal vibe.

Similarities to Iced Earth, Judas Priest Painkiller-era and King Diamond all come to mind frequently. Vocalist Sean Peck’s high octave screeches might turn some people off, but Halford and King Diamond make a decent living from their falsettos. Some people might also scream Judas Priest or King Diamond rip-off, but those are just two artists that have had an impact on Cage’s sound.

The double guitar attack of Dave Garcia and Steve Brogden, the bottom end assault of Pete Stone, and the thunderous drum display of Norm Leggio (Psychotic Waltz), provides the powerful backdrop to Peck’s air raid siren wails.

Cage’s songwriting and story-telling is part of the band’s strengths. Whether it’s a historical, war-related or horror-themed song, they vividly capture the mood lyrically. Some material verges into cheesy territory or silly comic book scenarios, but otherwise, Cage produce some ass-kicking metal songs.

“Bloodsteel” opens with some heavy reverb-laden tremolo picking and black metal blast beats which then settles into a fast paced metal riff in the vein of ”Jugulator.” One-man black metal band Bitter Frost performs a guest lead guitar spot.

“Metal Empire” is a slightly cheesy ode to heavy metal — fans of Manowar should dig it. “War of the Undead,” is one of the fastest and thrashiest songs Cage has ever penned. Peck is a real scream machine the whole way through. A soon-to-be classic Cage song is “The Beast of Bray Road.” It has references to “Black River Falls” from their last albumScience Of Annihilation and is about a werewolf.

When it comes to Cage releases, the packaging is top-notch. The brilliant cover artwork of Marc Sasso (Dio, Halford) and the stunning 16-page inside booklet complete with lyrics and artwork by Danial Duarte and Forrest Butler are great visuals to accompany Cage’s aural assault.

Cage has been slugging it out in the metal world for almost 20 years. Some people love ’em, some people hate ’em. But on Supremacy Of Steel, there’s no doubt that Cage is more than capable of delivering the metal goods.
