Tennessee River Crooks – Tennessee River Crooks 1976 (2011 Reissue)
“This album is the first effort of a group of dusty musicians who call themselves Tennessee River Crooks. It is not produced by a major record label, it does not contain many of the tricks and gimmicks normally associated with such a production.
It is the group effort of quite a few people who are interested in music in general and this band in particular. What you will hear is the band, with most of the rhythm tracks recorded live, just as they sound when you hear them live. The music is all original, the reproduction is realistic. The album was recorded at the Sound Farm, a studio located out in the woods, outside a little settlement called Puryear, Tennessee, between June and October, 1976.”
Review:
This is an incredible private press album—it’s more than Southern rock, it’s American music. “Song of David” is so touching, heartfelt, and filled with honesty. The rocking tunes have no shmaltz whatsoever, with sharp lead guitar work, solid rhythm section, and a singer more like a Tennessee Steve Miller than Ronnie Van Zandt. Even the one somewhat duff track, “Old Music,” has some weird touches that make it a bit more interesting, placing it in that “private press” mode. Overall this is a great record deserving of a wider audience. Good luck finding one!!
