Dave Kilminster – Scarlet – The Director’s Cut 2011

Roger Water’s lead guitarist Dave Kilminster

It takes some guitarists a life time to win the respect and acclaim of their peers, but not Dave Kilminster. He was named Guitarist Of The year in 1991, as a relative unknown, taking his first steps in the music industry.

It wasn’t Kilminster’s back catalogue of hits or his world renowned live show that captured the imagination (he didn’t have any of that back then; he was still working for IBM), he simply took the critics’ breath away with his playing style and technique.

The magazines weren’t the only ones to get behind him; he soon found himself invited to teach at the Guitar Institute in Acton. From that moment onwards Kilminster’s career would begin to blossom leading him to tour the world with his heroes Keith Emerson and Roger Waters.

As a music reviewer, I am lucky enough to be in a situation where bands, artists and record labels alike actually care about, and want to know what I think if their music. This puts me in a great spot where I am constantly flooded with new music to listen to and get to discover a lot of up and coming talent that most people haven’t heard of yet for one reason or another. Okay, so I get stuck listening to some crappy stuff sometimes, but every now and then I get to hear something really great too. I must admit though, It’s been a long time since I’ve been genuinely excited about hearing a band for the first time. You know that kind of excited when you hear something and you immediately know it’s one of the best things you’ve ever heard? Yeah, well that’s exactly what happened to me when I first listened to TO HIDE HER, the first full-length album release from Melbourne-based art rock group TOE HIDER.

Guitar legend Carlos Santana has enjoyed a tremendous resurgence in popularity and cultivated a new generation of fans over the past couple of decades via his collaborations with the biggest names in pop music. He made a huge impact in 1999 with Supernatural, which featured the multiple Grammy-winning hit “Smooth” with vocalist Rob Thomas, and other guest appearances by the likes of Eric Clapton and Dave Matthews. Santana’s three subsequent releases have followed that winning formula and focused on vocal-driven numbers with a star-studded cast including Michelle Branch, Steven Tyler, Chris Cornell, India.Arie, and Nas, among many others. But while these outings have cast him as a pop culture icon, his die-hard guitar fans longed for some new incarnations of what they consider “classic” Santana—the guy that kicks ass on the 6-string.

AUSTRALIAN POWERHOUSE LAURA WILDE IS CRASHING TED NUGENT’S NORTH AMERICAN TOUR – JUNE 2012

The ferocious debut—Sold My Soul—from Laura Wilde, the 22-year old hard rock import from Down Under (Melbourne, to be exact) was enough to land her on the upcoming Ted Nugent tour. Wilde is exactly that. She’s a hard-charging take-no-prisoners balls-to-the-wall rocker who wrote it all, sang it all, played lead guitar, bass guitar and drums on this, her gritty, powerful debut. Totally fearless, citing such influences as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Joan Jett, and Dave Grohl, Wilde intends to knock out crowds on her leg of the upcoming tour.

Sweet – New York Connection 2012

NOW!

“Are you ready Steve? Uh-huh. Andy? Yeah. Mick? Okay. Alright fellas, let’s go!”

It started with a press release arriving at Dangerdog HQ: (The) Sweet were releasing a new album of cover songs. There was name I hadn’t heard in decades. Much to my surprise The Sweet still exists. It seems guitarist Andy Scott has been reanimating the band in some form since 1984. (It appears that bassist Steve Priest, another original member, leads an alternate Sweet out of Los Angeles). Scott and company cut SweetLife in 2002. Now, here’s the real kicker: all this brought back a singular memory. I saw Sweet open for Foghat in 1978 at the Hershey Park Arena in Pennsylvania.

Hawkwind – Onward (2012)

To be released on April 30 via Eastworld Recordings.

If Pink Floyd were always just businessmen in loonpants, Hawkwind really did appear to live the dream – or was it the nightmare? The early Seventies people’s band looked as though they permanently camped out, though live at least they weren’t easy to see: just masses of tangled hair, glimpsed through flickering strobes and acid-fuelled projections, their music a wind tunnel of remorseless two-chord riffing. Indeed, while “Silver Machine”, their one hit single, is a true rock’n’roll classic, Hawkwind’s albums always seemed the least reason to get excited about them, compared to freakin’ out at their gigs, trying to get arrested with them or fantasising about their über-voluptuous dancer Stacia. Anyone who was into Hawkwind “just for the music” was missing the point.

ALAN SIMON – EXCALIBUR III – THE ORIGINS (2012)

Genre: Prog Rock
Year: 2012

My first memory goes back in the 60’s! A beautiful book illustrated in black and white about the mysterious King Arthur… For a child this character is the best! As all the boys at the same age, I dreamed to be this Child King that can brandish Excalibur. The girls are much more stupid! What an idea wanting to be a princess in love with two guys on the same time, ah la la it is really a girl thing! (Laughs)
MARTIN BARRE FROM JETHRO TULL: My middle name is Lancelot so as a school child I was very familiar with King Arthur legend and I knew a lot about his story, and I ‘ve read it in the past but I haven’t heard about it since. It’s a very strong story, very present with its castle, its domain in north Devon supposedly.

John Taglieri – Lucky #9 2012

Exclusive NOW!

On April 17, the unsung hero of working class rock and AOR, John Taglieri, released an EP called “Lucky #9” (Leap Dog Music). In his own words, he states, “I approached this EP a little differently. Being my ninth release, I think I am more in tune with what I wanted to say as an artist. I wrote songs that really meant a lot to me right now in life and tried to tell stories that would connect. Using my new studio and working with Lee [Lee J. Turner, who has production credits that include Darius Rucker, Jewel, Leann Rimes, and Bo Bice] again was awesome as well. There was a great vibe throughout the whole recording process. I’m very proud of ‘Lucky #9’, and I hope people enjoy it.”
